Want to Be a Better Actor? Try These Simple Tricks

Let’s face it. Acting isn’t easy.

A lot of people think it’s just about saying your lines, looking good, and maybe crying a little when the scene gets emotional. But real acting, the kind that people remember, comes from doing a few things most folks don’t really talk about. Here’s how you can make your acting feel real and relatable.

  1. Know what your character really wants

Every character has an emotional need. Something they’re really chasing deep inside. It could be love, respect, freedom, revenge, or just someone to understand them. The audience connects when they feel that need, even if no one says it out loud.

Think about Ranga in Aavesham. Remember the phone call to Bibi’s mom? Or the climax when he cries? He’s not just a loud, fun guy. Deep down, he wants care, loyalty, and someone to stand by him. That’s what makes him human. That’s what makes you care.

  1. Create a backstory, even if it’s not in the script

Good actors don’t just stick to the lines. They imagine a full life for the character. Who are they? Where did they grow up? What do they believe in? What scares them?

Fahadh Faasil in Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum is a great example. When he talks to Suraj in that police station scene, you feel like there’s a whole story behind his words. The script doesn’t tell us, but he knows. And that’s why it feels so real.

  1. Watch real people

This one’s simple, but powerful. Just observe people. Sit at a tea shop, stand at a bus stop, or scroll reels. Pay attention to how people talk, walk, argue, smile, fidget.

Write it down if something sticks out. Maybe someone taps their fingers when they lie. Maybe someone pauses before saying something hard. These small details can make your acting feel natural and unique.

Look at Mammootty in Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He didn’t just put on makeup and deliver lines. He studied how Ambedkar moved, spoke, and carried himself. That’s what brought the role to life.
